Our mission
We believe it is possible to increase the chances of finding and staying in employment :
- By identifying individual need and designing holistic ESOL sessions that acknowledge the links between mental, physical and social well-being
- By giving all people, including those considered to be 'hard to reach' equal opportunity to access appropriate ESOL sessions
- By providing communities and individuals access to the tools and resources they need to help better themselves
- By offering advocacy services to those unable or unwilling to speak for themselves
Through working in partnership with organisations from the voluntary and community sector (VCS) our aim is to lead on improving the job prospects as well as health and well-being of people and communities so that all individuals are motivated to make positive decisions about their future and enjoy life more.
Intelligenteacher plans for the next five years
Over the coming five years we have set ourselves the following four objectives:
1) Establish an organisational infrastructure
- We aim to develop a nationally recognised body and strategy to establish a clear understanding of people with ESOL needs
- We will also establish a regional and national infrastructure through which ESOL trainers and organisations can network to implement and improve services.
2) Widen and increase support for membership
We will increase the support we offer to our members. We will do this by:
- Establishing a quality/accreditation model for community and organisations through education and training;
- Keeping members abreast of changes and aware of emerging issues;
- Addressing any skills shortages such as management, planning and PR;
- Providing the opportunity to combine and grow existing links, service level and commissioning agreements, funding and operational arrangements with colleges and educational consortia
- Sharing best practice and encouraging collaboration to ensure efficiency and avoid duplication of service;
- Securing funding for development, support and long-term sustainability
3) Communicate the benefits of ESOL
We will help people make informed choices about their ESOL learning by providing high quality, consistent messages and information, through:
- Continual development of our website to raise awareness of ESOL learning
4) Take a lead role in the development of the sector
We also aim to strengthen the visibility of leadership in the educational sector by demonstrating our ability to provide cohesion and leadership. To do this we will:
- Create a forum for debate and better communications from grass roots up;
- Establish a window for ESOL to influence national policy by strengthening lobbying activity, inputting to national policies and speaking at conferences;
- Use our regional infrastructure to raise the profile and impact of the sector;
- Confirm the role and success of the VCS in delivering community-based preventive health - encouraging commissioning within the VCS which will increase access to ESOL services and promote individual choice to improve career prospects
- Evaluate the success of projects and the lessons that have been learnt in order to monitor the effectiveness and impact of ESOL learning.
